Is it legal? How does the homologation test work?
Yes. Retrokit is the first retrofit kit for vintage Vespas homologated in Italy. The process works like an LPG conversion on a car:
- the workshop installs the kit and issues a signed and stamped installation declaration;
- with that document, through a vehicle registration agency, you book the art. 78 inspection at the Motorizzazione (Italian vehicle authority);
- at the end your registration document stays the same, it simply reports electric drive instead of the petrol engine.
The original type approval remains the historic one: no changes to the vehicle, registration date unchanged, road tax exemption and insurance (non historic policies) discounted between 40% and 60%.
Rules outside Italy vary by country: write to us and we will tell you what your local authority requires.
Is Retrokit certified?
Yes. Retrokit passed the official tests UN/ECE no. 10R06, EU no. 3/2014, EU no. 134/2014, 2014/35/EU, UN/ECE 60R00, UN/ECE 28R00/06 and UN/ECE no. 85, and it is homologated in Italy through a NADR code issued by the Ministry of Transport.

Can I refit the original engine later?
Yes. The electric power unit uses the same mounting points as the original engine (frame, rear wheel and rear brake) and the installation requires no structural changes to the body. The original engine stays yours and the Vespa keeps its collector integrity.
Who installs the kit and how long does it take?
The system is plug and play and the fitting takes about 4 hours. The kit must be installed by a workshop, which then issues the installation declaration required for the inspection. Screws, pre cut cables and assembly instructions are included in the box.
What is included in the conversion kit?
The Retrokit kit includes:
- Electric power unit with the same mounting points as the original engine (frame, rear wheel and rear brake).
- Battery and pre wired battery compartment, charger included.
- Complete wiring harness, with 12Vdc horn and modified light switch.
- All LED bulbs (front and rear).
- Bluetooth connectivity pack for the Retrokit app.
- Digital display (for round headlight versions, Special and Primavera).
- Adapter and connector for onboard charging without removing the battery.
- Fast charge connector for mobile devices (USB and USB-C).
- Full set of cables and sheaths, already cut to size.
- Screws and assembly instructions.
- Certificates and documents required for homologation.

Do you sell only the kit or also complete Vespas?
If you already own a vintage Piaggio Vespa we can convert it and restore it if needed. If you do not own one, we supply the vintage scooter and you can customise every detail.
